Four Lane Ends, Winster, Derbyshire, DE4 2DD

Darley Dale lies in an attractive part of the Derwent Valley, on the edge of the Peak District between Matlock and Bakewell. The problem for most drivers along the A6 is that they see little of the beauty of the valley on their six mile long journey. Extensive ribbon building hides the view. The route is lined by rather sombre gritstone buildings and can become very congested at weekends and in the summer. The town has had a Town Council since the late 1900s. It covers a wide area including the old settlements of Hackney, Farley, Two Dales, Darley Hillside and Churchtown, as well as the piece along the A6. The council offices and meeting room are housed in the Whitworth Community Centre.

Derbyshire Centre, Bakewell Carnival

July 4, 2024 - July 7, 2024

Ashford Farm Cottages, Ashford In The Water, Bakewell, Derbyshire, DE45 1QN

Ashford in the Water is a very pretty, chocolate box village in the heart of the White Peak, visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. It is home to the most photographed bridge in Britain, which has the gloriously crystal clear waters of the River Wye flowing free underneath. It's a tiny place and is made up of ancient picturesque cottages, two pubs, a stunning hotel with a riverside setting, a beautiful church, which houses relics dating back to the 1200s and a village store and delicatessen, who boasts they have the best home-made pickles in Derbyshire. Home to the lucky few, the cottages were once owned by the Chatsworth estate. These were sold off in the 1950s to pay for death duties. With the famous Sheep Wash Bridge adorning many a postcard and photograph, tourists flock to hear how sheep were washed in the water before chemical dips were introduced. Lambs were kept in the walled pen on the other side, which is still in good working order and used in demonstrations today, to entice their mothers to have their bath and swim to the other side. The bridge makes a great vantage point for watching the huge rainbow trout meandering leisurely on their way below your feet. We are so lucky that Bakewell still have thier carnival week traditions to share with your children and grandchildren. They offer an opportunity to bring the community together and bridge gaps between generations with shared memories, festivities and the sharing of traditional practices like the art of well dressing.

Derbyshire Centre, Parsley Hay

July 19, 2024 - July 21, 2024

Parsley Hay, Hartington, Derbyshire, SK17 0DF

Parsley Hay is a tiny cluster of houses which evolved with the laying of the Cromford and High Peak railway line in 1825. At 1150 feet above sea level, Parsley Hay station was amongst the highest in England. The railway line which opened in 1830 ran from Cromford to Whaley Bridge and was used mainly to transport heavy minerals from the Cromford Canal to the Peak Forest Canal. It was thought of as an extension to the water form of transport, so much so, that the stations including Parsley Hay were known as wharves, and the nine inclines along the route were the equivalent of locks. At Cromford the line started at a height of 277 feet and ascended to 1264 feet on the limestone uplands before then descending to 517 feet at Whaley Bridge. The line finally closed in 1967.
