Kniveton is a pretty, grey stone village, sheltered in a deep hollow on the slope of Madge Hill. Most people simply pass through Kniveton, on their way to Carsington Water but it is worth a look if only for its charming little church. The church consists only of a nave, chancel and a tower. The tower, built in the 13th century, is unbuttressed and contains small lancet windows, battlements and a short spire. The medieval glass in the chancel depicts the arms of the family Kniveton. It was Lady Kniveton who gave the altar its lovely flagon and chalice in 1572. However, Sir Andrew Kniveton became so impoverished through his loyalty to Charles the First that he had to sell most of the family estates. The church also contains a 13th century font. An ancient yew guards the doorway to the church and still bears the grooves worn when the archers were sharpening their arrows. Just north of the village is the Bronze Age burial mound at Wigber Low which has revealed some important remains from the village`s past. The village has two pubs called The Ketch and The Red Lion.

Ashover Showground, Ashover, Derbyshire, S45 0BZ
One of the prettiest villages in Derbyshire, Ashover has a fascinating 15th century church, many historic buildings and stunning surrounding countryside. Ashover lies in the valley of the River Amber, about half way between Chesterfield to the North and Matlock to the South. It has a long history dating back to the Saxons who called the village 'Essovre' - beyond the ash trees. The Domesday Book credited it with a church, a priest, several ploughs and a mill, with a taxable value of 30 shillings. Amazingly, this tiny Derbyshire village played a very important role in the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Traditionally bowmen from Ashover, Men of Asher as they were known, fought with Henry V at the famous battle. One of the local pubs, The Crispin, also has direct links to the momentous event in English history.

High Bradfield is up on the hill, clustered around the church and the site of the old Norman castle, and overlooks Low Bradfield. It is an extremely attractive place with a fine old church, several notable old buildings, numerous cottages made of the local gritstone, together with the Old Horns public house and nearby renowned Bradfield Brewery.

Mining Museum Wakefield, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF4 4RH
WE GO DEEP. WE SPARK COAL TO LIFE. WE RAISE THE LAMP. WE PASS ON THE FLAME. The pick and the lamp have long been proud symbols of coal mining but they also represent what we, as a museum, stand for. We are the National Coal Mining Museum for England. We go deep and coal runs deep in us and in everything we do. We go deep into the heart of what coal mining means to us and this nation. We scratch beneath the surface, we pick at the life beneath, we unearth the history and the pride. We spark coal to life. We raise a lamp to the stories, the culture, the values. We illuminate the past and we light the future of our connection with coal, mining and its rich heritage. We are the guardians of the deep, the custodians of the coal, we are the keepers of the stories and the treasurers of the memories. We will pass them on. We are the gateway to our nation's relationship with the earth, with the lumps of black rock that glow, heat, power. We fuel the passion felt for an honest livelihood and we kindle the flame of pride, honest graft, community, loyalty and strength. We delve deep in the earth, deep in the memories, deep into what it really means to mine the hard times and the good, the tragedies and the victories. From dinosaurs to the Industrial Revolution, impassioned strikes to closures and looking to a greener future. We love to get our hands dirty in the past and we hold them up to the future generations, encouraging them to roll the history around in their hands too. We bring a living history. With real people, real miners, real expertise shared with passion. We represent the land. We represent the graft. We represent community. We represent the pride. We represent the lives touched by the mines. The faces behind the coal dust. The laughter lines. The tear streaks. The families. The dignity. What do we leave you with? Your own desire to go deeper. A desire to return. A desire to pass the story on. An understanding that goes deeper than just the facts and the artefacts. We go deep in the land. Deep in the heart. Deep in our identity as a nation. We will raise the lamp and pass the flame so the story is never extinguished. We will keep the fire burning. The light will never go out.
